Another sweeping, epic, novel from Kim Stanley Robinson, this time imagining the near future as climate change becomes more and more problematic, and humanity is forced to deal with it.
The Ministry for the Future is a cli-fi novel by American science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson published in 2020. Set in the near future, the novel follows a subsidiary body, established under the Paris Agreement, whose mission is to advocate for the world’s future generations of citizens as if their rights are as valid as the present generation’s. While they pursue various ambitious projects, the effects of climate change are determined to be the most consequential. The plot primarily follows Mary Murphy, the head of the titular Ministry for the Future, and Frank May, an American aid worker traumatized by experiencing a deadly heat wave in India. Many chapters are devoted to other (mostly anonymous) characters’ accounts of future events, as well as their ideas about ecology, economics, and other subjects.
I’m uploading this because there does not seem to be a chapterized version available here. One MP3 for each chapter, each file is carefully named and tagged.

I love the 3 body problem, but I’d not say it’s very similar, other than both being generally Hard Sci-fi.

This world has done less than ZERO about climate change.
2024 was another record year for fossil fuel consumption and Greenhouse gas emissions.
The Pairs accords were nothing but more political theater. A photo op for world leaders - what an Fing joke.
I despise CNN, but their headline says it all.
.
**Fossil fuel use and emissions hit record highs as world struggles with deadly heat, storms and fires**
”
The world consumed record amounts of oil, coal and gas last year, pushing planet-heating carbon pollution to a new high, according to a report published Thursday, shattering climate scientists’ hopes that global energy emissions may have peaked.
The growth in fossil fuels drove a 2.1% increase in energy-related emissions last year, pushing them above 40 billion metric tons for the first time, according to the report published Thursday by the Energy Institute.
The report paints a bleak picture of a world struggling to wean itself off planet-warming fossil fuels even as the impacts of the climate crisis become more intense and more deadly.”

“..a world struggling to wean itself off planet-warming fossil fuels..”
.
That’s BS. Struggling implies there was some kind of effort, there has been none, unless you count the effort it takes to move our jaw up and down as people continue to BS their kids and each other that we are working on it - were not.
.
I’m so glad I choose not to have kids. My heart is breaking for my teen nephews and nieces - they know and are more honest than adults. No jobs or customers or status to lose.
I just hate the lying. Humans are not the architects of their own behaviours, nor are they in control of them.
Evolution under the dictates of thermodynamics (Maximum Power Principle MPP) is what calls the shots.
“Nature abhors a gradient” and like all lifeforms we are gradient reducers, only with more ability to capture more energy and reduce more gradients. Our small part helping the universe reach it’s end goal of heat death and all shall be still.
