Head, Hand, Heart: Why Intelligence Is Over-Rewarded, Manual Workers Matter, and Caregivers Deserve More Respect - David Goodhart

A Financial Times Best Book of the Year 2020
A TIMELY AND PROVOCATIVE ARGUMENT FROM LEADING POLITICAL ANALYST DAVID GOODHART ABOUT THE SEVERELY IMBALANCED DISTRIBUTION OF STATUS AND WORK IN WESTERN SOCIETIES .
The coronavirus pandemic revealed what we ought to have already that nurses, caregivers, supermarket workers, delivery drivers, cleaners, and so many others are essential. Until recently, this work was largely regarded as menial by the same society that now lauds them as heroes. How did we get here?
In his groundbreaking follow-up to the bestselling The Road to Somewhere , David Goodhart divides society into people who work with their Heads (cognitive work), with their Hands (manual work), or with their Hearts (caring work), and considers each group’s changing status and influence. Today, the “best and the brightest” trump the “decent and hardworking.” Qualities like character, compassion, craft, and physical labor command far less respect in our workforce. This imbalance has led to the disaffection and alienation of millions of people.
David Goodhart reveals the untold history behind this disparity and outlines the challenges we face as a result. Cognitive ability has become the gold standard of human esteem, and those in the cognitive class now shape society largely in their own interest. To put it smart people have become too powerful.
A healthy democratic society respects and rewards a broad range of achievement, and provides meaning and value for people who cannot—or do not want to—achieve in the classroom and professional career market. We must shift our thinking to see all workers as essential, and not just during crises like the coronavirus pandemic. This is the dramatic story of the struggle for status and dignity in the 21st century.

Extreme reaction to a book.

id even go as far to say that a good plumber or tradesman, is 100x more valuable than a psychopath CEO executive like Alan Joyce ( Qantas ) who is an unrepentant brown-noser, mega-fraudster and overtly ugly and hateful Cult of Covidian member.

@privateero - you are correct.

Columbia22, why so grumpy?
privateero, plumbers 4 sure, but all the people who run & maintain the systems that deliver pressurized water to your home & keep the sewers & wastewater treatment working.
Take away our flush toilets & within 48hrs the diseases, illness & deaths will begin.
Lets hear it for the garbage men too.
Columbia22, why so grumpy? :(

**The Enduring Power of the Garbage Strike**
.
‘By revealing social inequities and making urban dysfunction visible, sanitation strikes like the one now roiling Paris can be effective tools for change — and signs of larger discord.’
.
“”Sanitation strikes are indeed remarkable in their power to bring social discord to the eyes and ears (and noses) of the wider world, and they can bring on lasting political changes.”"

I’d be surprised to see any kind of sanitation strike in America given how obedient & conformist American men are. Plus every so called ‘grass roots’ movement is either a phony gatekeeper NGO or infiltrated within a couple of weeks by the same scum who brought you ‘color revolutions’ & the 2014 Ukrainian coup -
F the EU says potty mouth Vicky. We (US empire) paid for & orchestrated the coup & we will tell you who we have selected to replace Ukraine’s democratically elected leader - a clown, a TV personality. Then they called on the US MSM to give Zelenskyy {a native Russian speaker} a make over & charm offensive American style by putting him on the cover of Vogue and Time magazine (man of the year). He’s a fiction designed by the US state department. It’s amazing how millions of otherwise intelligent people bought it hook line & sinker. There’s actually a real human being, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, behind the US created fictional President Zelenskyy character. Listening to him recently has made it clear that the role has gone to his head. In the end, the US will abandon Zelensky and the Ukraine and it’s people and all the propagandized westerners who argued so vehemently for the US empire’s narrative, will chuck it all down the memory hole while they wait for the next dog whistle to blow and get their next instructions.

Intelligence is exploited just like everything else. It just costs more because intelligent people are stupid. A point the author can’t seem to understand.
