Xie xie. Ni hao, ma. I’m just downloading it, but I’ll post after I’ve tried it. I do know a bit of Shanghainese, which is very close to Mandarin, so I’m hoping it will help learning the tones. The true test of a language course is whether you can take college-level courses in the language when you’ve finished the course. I’ve become fluent in a half-dozen languages in my life (by living for at least a year in a country where that was the native language). I first learned I had this ability when I, an American with no other language training except 4 years of classical Latin, went to Mexico to do my sophomore year in college at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (Autonomous University of the State of Morelos) in Cuernavaca, Mexico about 70 km south of Mexico City (Mexico DF). I went down to Cuernavaca at the end of my freshman year, lived with a “foster” family where no English was spoken for 3 months & then began to take all of my sophomore classes in Spanish. I read extensively in Spanish & even came to dream in Spanish. That was in 1967. Since then, as a consultant, I’ve had the opportunity to live in a variety of countries around the world. The only language that beat me was Cantonese (even Mandarin speakers can’t understand a speaker from Hong Kong or Guangzhou). They usually communicate in English - the world’s Lingua Franca. When I lived in Hong Kong for a year, I noted that the TV had 1 primary Mandarin station & 3 Cantonese stations & all of them used Chinese subtitles, since both dialects are MOSTLY the same in written form. Cantonese has 6 tonal variations for every word (as opposed to the 4 in Mandarin). Some say that dialects can include anywhere from 7 to 9 total variations. If you have not grown up speaking a tonal language, then your ear was never trained to pick up the subtle, but significant tonal variations which give the same word multiple unrelated meanings.

Thanks to dlasis for uploading.
Thanks to the seeders for their seeding.
File downloaded quickly and the audio quality is good.
I do enjoy the fact that the narrator has a British accent and it makes the contrast between his eloquently delivered English and the beginner Chinese phrases quite pronounced, but that’s what we’re here for.
I found the pronounciation of the lady Chinese speaker to be a bit harsh in sound, and preferred the way the male Chinese speaker pronounced words, but that’s just me.
Overall, a good course for absolute beginners to get some basic phrases down.
