How bitches, trainwrecks, shrews, and crazy women have taken over pop culture and liberated women from having to be nice.
Female characters throughout history have been burdened by the moral trap that is likeability. Any woman who dares to reveal her messy side has been treated as a cautionary tale. Today, unlikeable female characters are everywhere in film, TV, and wider pop culture. For the first time ever, they are being accepted by audiences and even showered with industry awards. We are finally accepting that women are—gasp—fully fledged human beings. How did we get to this point?
Unlikeable Female Characters traces the evolution of highly memorable female characters, examining what exactly makes them popular, how audiences have reacted to them, and the ways in which pop culture is finally allowing us to celebrate the complexities of being a woman. Anna Bogutskaya, film programmer, broadcaster, and cofounder of the horror film collective and podcast The Final Girls takes us on a journey through popular film, TV, and music, looking at the nuances of womanhood on and off-screen to reveal whether pop culture—and society—is finally ready to embrace complicated women.

and that is why i don’t watch the far-left programming of television today, it is a monumental waste of time and harming your brain and world view. Not to mention painfully cliche and unwatchable when every authority figure has to be a bossy black/colored female.

@Privateero you forgot the word AMERICAN before far-left programming. everything you mentioned in your comment is AMERICA, american tv is like that, American far left people are like that. in the real, rational NON American world, Liberal people (like me) are just as annoyed and frustrated by AMERICAN liberalism, and AMERICAN television. weather you’re far left or far write, its the same level of insanity in that country, it’s all the same to international onlookers. it’s all ridiculous.

@entonbray
I’m not sure what you include as “media.” (news + scripted programming + “reality” TV?), and you are entitled to your individual opinion. But for the last 20+ years, the vast majority of critics and viewers have declared that we’re in an unrivaled era of quality (primarily scripted) programming.
So to say it’s “never been more unwatchable” is a bit absurd.
