A deeply reported, riveting account of a cold case murder in Los Angeles, unsolved until DNA evidence implicated a shocking suspect - a female detective within the LAPD’s own ranks.
On February 24, 1986, 29-year-old newlywed Sherri Rasmussen was murdered in the home she shared with her husband, John. The crime scene suggested a ferocious struggle, and police initially assumed it was a burglary gone awry. Before her death, Sherri had confided to her parents that an ex-girlfriend of John’s, a Los Angeles police officer, had threatened her. The Rasmussens urged the LAPD to investigate the ex-girlfriend, but the original detectives pursued only burglary suspects, and the case went cold.
DNA analysis did not exist when Sherri was murdered. Decades later, a swab from a bite mark on Sherri’s arm revealed her killer was in fact female, not male. A DNA match led to the arrest and conviction of veteran LAPD detective Stephanie Lazarus, John’s onetime girlfriend.
The Lazarus Files delivers the visceral experience of being inside a real-life murder mystery. McGough reconstructs the lives of Sherri, John, and Stephanie; the love triangle that led to Sherri’s murder; and the homicide investigation that followed. Was Stephanie protected by her fellow officers? What did the LAPD know, and when did they know it? Are there other LAPD cold cases with a police connection that remain unsolved?

Thank you very much for sharing this.

An interesting story narrated by a ROBOT; doubt if it was the author’s narration, unless he is one. Sad! Could not finish.

Thank you for saving me time, marcodiluce. Narration is everything for me. A bad one can ruin a good book every time.

No, the book is narrated by a human; I think it’s the author, but definitely a man.
Yes, the narration is rather slow and definitely not a great one, but not too bad either.
All-in-all, I don’t regret those ~27hrs spent on listening to the book - it’s really worth it. For an uninitiated the story is truly shocking, but not for me. I knew prior to this book that the LAPD is just a bunch of opportunists, sociopaths, degenerates or plain criminals, but the book is very instructive in that Neil Rasmussen (Sherri’s father) learnt it the hard way and too late.
Moreover, the LAPD is not exceptional. I can go on, and on and on about how the police are real criminals in the US, plus DAs, prosecutors, and judges. The American judicial and law enforcement system is beyond horrible, and certainly beyond repair. As I mentioned earlier, Neil learned it the hard way, I learned from the many true crime books I’ve read plus by listening to Free Talk Live, watching some videos and listening to people who was forced to interact with police.
I hope this and similar books will be of help to at least some people to realize what I know and to learn it not like Neil but in a safe distance from the so called “peace officers”, and plan their inevitable interactions with those criminals, sociopaths and degenerates accordingly.
P.S. To be objective, there are some good POs and even DAs, like Juan Martinez who prosecuted Jodi Arias, but look what happened to him and learn from it (I don’t believe for a second that allegations against him are true). But! But, to find such people like Mr. Martinez is like winning a $1bn lottery. What are your (and mine) chances of that? Zero. Null. So, just learn from other’s people mistakes, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
