Publisher’s Summary
This prize-winning account of the pre-Reformation church recreates lay people’s experience of religion, showing that late-medieval Catholicism was neither decadent nor decayed, but a strong and vigorous tradition. For this edition, Duffy has written a new introduction reflecting on recent developments in our understanding of the period.

Considering the war that is being created against the Christians, a positive look at religion is probably a good thing, despite the very rocky history. But the Vatican is the real problem, not peoples beliefs.

As the Reformists said back in the 16th and 17th century (and were burned at the stake for it), the bible does not mention popes, bishops, fancy clothing etc. The creation of the Pope was done purely to keep the common man down, in the same way that they banned secular people from learning to read and write, claiming it was “a gift of god”. Richard III was the person who proclaimed that everyone had the right to education and learning how to read and write.

There is no war against Christians. Sure, some parts of the world still kill them for being Christians, but those are areas Christians have always died as a minority faith but still seem to persevere anyway. You’re likely brainwashed into believing the “culture war” is against Christians but there you would also be mistaken. As it wasn’t your original thought but just you parroting what other people tell you to think, it’s not surprising. It’s not much different, really, than what the Vatican has done for centuries. There’s nothing inherently wrong with Jesus tapping Peter as the rock upon which he’d build his church and thereby proclaiming the first pope. And it’s no coincidence that church leaders are referred to as shepherds leading their flocks. It’s fitting.
History remembers those who made it. It’s forgotten the countless people who made the world better because of their faith in Him. Priests had one of the highest mortality rates during the Black Death because so many of them wouldn’t abandon their congregations even in the face of their own deaths. They didn’t do it out of some power play or manipulation but a genuine belief that they were instruments of God and their duty was to the people they ministered. Unsung heroes for people who were so united in their beliefs that we couldn’t possibly understand it today, for better and for worse.

So much needless damage was tragically wrought by ignorant fanatics in their zealous attacks on valuable tradition - destruction of irreplaceable art & architecture; the burning of libraries - with truly untold consequences.
The Church had created, inter alia, the university; spread literacy, learning & knowledge; preserved ancient texts in scriptoria; created the concept & doctrine of human rights; developed the hospital; cared for the poor & sick - when no one else would (incl many outcast maladies, such as leprosy); created the most effective & unprecedented charity networks, famine relief; developed a concept of equality wholly unknown to the Roman world; actually drove four major renaissances (as well as localised instantiations); spearheaded developments in art, science, architecture, mathematics, economics, music, philosophy; introduced agricultural reforms which generated higher yields, in order to feed more people, & support a (finally) growing population; created the first mass peace movements in history (Peace of God, Truce of God); gave rise to international law & the first international human rights treaty/covenant/instrument, etc. etc.
This - finally - was something like civilisation. No other institution has contributed on this scale.
Then, because some greedy, syphilitic wife-murderer wanted a divorce, all of that mindless, barbaric destruction was unleashed…
