The division may not actually be between a “left” and a “right” philosophy. But there is a division, and the label being inappropriate doesn’t make that go away.
In China “right wing” is communist. In Australia “liberal” is conservative. The words don’t mean anything without context.

Thx, Mo. The dial depends on geography. The centre here in Eur is in a different place as compared to the US, for inst. As Pres. Biden observed, the Democrats largely abandoned working class voters for mid class support in 80s/90s. Liberal as a term for individual rights over state power is quite accurate. What more Amer conservatives ought to realise, if they wish to grow, is that just as many African Americans, Asians, Muslims & Latin Americans are culturally & economically conservative as the rest of the pop.

@Gweilo: not only is the conservative party in Australia the “Liberals” … but …
the farmers/rural party is “the Nationals”
the “Australian Labor Party” uses American spelling
And the most openly divisive parties are called “One Nation” and “United Australia”. :D

If we have learned anything from 2016 to 2020 it should be that the side that claims that there is no difference between sides - is far right.
I.e. Only one side will look at Nazis and go “Wow! They are so much like us!”
On a side note, authors are Mormons, with degrees from a Mormon university.
I.e. Conservative by default.
Big surprise - they’re bothsidesing it.
Incidentally, our boy Verlan has the further argument about Trump and the Republicans:

Rather than moving the Republican Party away from, or toward, conservatism, Trump has instead simply helped to redefine what “conservatism” now means.”
I.e. We can’t really tell whether eating large quantities of butter makes one fat or not.
Rather, eating a lot of butter simply helps redefine what “fat” now means.
That’s the deep intellectual insight and academic honesty behind the nose and between the ears of our boys Verlan and Hyram.
