Here’s a brief synopsis of The Liveship Traders Trilogy by Robin Hobb (the 2026 audiobooks narrated by Lucy Tregear):Overall Series
This is the second trilogy in Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings world. It’s a nautical fantasy set in the trading city of Bingtown and the Pirate Isles, far south of the Six Duchies.
The story centers on sentient “liveships” made of wizardwood — magical vessels whose figureheads come to life after three generations of family deaths on board. The trilogy blends family drama, piracy, slavery, sea serpents, ancient magic, and political intrigue.
Book 1: Ship of Magic (1998 / 2026 audiobook)The Vestrit family’s fortunes rest on their liveship Vivacia. When the family patriarch dies aboard her, the ship quickens into a living, sentient being. However, control of the ship passes not to his seafaring daughter Althea Vestrit (who feels it is her rightful inheritance and has sailed with her since childhood), but to her ruthless brother-in-law Kyle. As the family struggles with debt and changing times in Bingtown, Althea sets out to reclaim her ship. Meanwhile, the ambitious pirate Kennit begins his ruthless rise, and mysterious sea serpents stir in the waters.
Book 2: The Mad ShipTensions escalate as the Vestrit family fractures further. Althea continues her quest, while young Malta Vestrit (Althea’s niece) becomes entangled in the dangerous secrets of the Rain Wild Traders and their mysterious magical goods. The liveship Vivacia, now sailing with pirates, begins to change under Kennit’s influence. Bingtown faces growing threats from within and without, and the “mad ship” Paragon (a troubled, unquickened liveship) plays a larger role.
Book 3: Ship of DestinyAll threads converge in a sweeping finale. Althea, Malta, the Vestrit family, the pirate king Kennit, the liveships (including the increasingly bloodthirsty Vivacia), and the enigmatic sea serpents head toward a climactic confrontation. Ancient Elderling magic, shifting alliances, and the fate of Bingtown and the Rain Wilds hang in the balance as characters fight for freedom, family, love, and destiny on the high seas.
The trilogy is widely praised for its strong female characters (especially Althea and Malta), rich world-building, morally complex characters, and its focus on sentient ships as fully realized beings with their own emotions and traumas.
The 2026 versions are new unabridged audiobooks narrated by Lucy Tregear, released as a fresh recording of the classic series (February 2026).

@worminbooks, I previously posted the series and yes, I did not realize there was an issue with the publisher source file. I believe it has been fixed. This posting should include the corrected version.
