Dont forget about the dozen or so times Trump was on the cover of The Economist too. But yeah, go for the knee-jerk reaction because it’s an article on race.
This is a respectable publication held to higher journalistic standards than the likes of Fox News.

I thought the Economist’s coverage was very fair and balanced. They did mention Floyd’s criminal history and the 2007 house invasion in which Floyd and 5 other men terrorized that pregnant woman. Floyd did spend 5 years in jail for this aggravated robbery (https://www.economist.com/obituary/2020/06/04/george-floyd-was-killed-on-may-25th). Of course, no sensible person would ever defend this but he did serve time for that. Don’t you believe in second chances? Do people who make such mistakes, own up to them, and make a concerted attempt at reforming themselves, and making amends not deserve to move on? I think you’ll find the Economist is by-and-large fairly conservative. Take this scenario:
A and B are arguing and A assaults B. Do you need to know what the argument was about? It was a resort to unnecessary violence. Sure, you could argue that Floyd was on fentanyl and resisted arrest but what’s your explanation for why you think Chauvin was justified in snuffing out the poor man’s life by asphyxiating him for 10 minutes once Floyd had been subdued and immobile? Are you saying he deserved to die for trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill and/or for his claustrophobia and/or for being black? I support the prosecution of the other officers to for their tacit complicity in this criminal act too. The world would be better place if we all had to answer for such actions.
You can cite MLK today once he’s already accepted to be an icon but if you were back in the 60 it wasn’t so clear to many to see through the obscuring details to the clear good King was fighting for. Sensible and thoughtful people like William F. Buckley were opposing him in defense of state rights (he later disowned this position); LBJ was at loggerheads with him over his opposition to the Vietnam war; and moralists demonized him for his womanizing (exposed by J. Edgar Hoover). You could after April 4th, 1968 have — in just the same manner you’re doing today with Floyd — have said “What, you’re supporting this philandering peacenik who supports tyrannical like federalist powers?”
We need to exercise some empathic regard and subtlety and nuance to be able to disentangle the obscuring details to see the larger picture.

@userbauser: I have to agree with your critique of this. The Economist’s coverage is a more balanced and considered take on the topic than any others I have heard. The trolls here, for lack of a better description, have probably not listened to this coverage and dismiss it out of turn because of underlying prejudice. Likewise, there is an assumption that The Economist is highly progressive from those who are unfamiliar with it. In my opinion it is centrist and the most nuanced reporting available. I think the uninitiated would be surprised at how conservative The Economist is if they would only give it a chance.
