The world of ancient Egypt springs magnificently to life in this astonishing historical novel of love, war, political intrigue, and religious revolution. Told from the first-person point of view, it is the story of Sinuhe, physician to the royal court of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and his successors in the middle of the tumultuous 14th century B.C. From his exalted position, Sinuhe was able to observe and participate in some of the most intimate and important decisions that affected the powerful Egyptian kingdom of the 18th Dynasty during a very troubled period of its history.
Waltari brilliantly captures the life and rhythms of the ancient world as it was 3,400 years ago. When Sinuhe is sent as envoy to various foreign courts, including Babylon, Syria, and Crete, he encounters strange people with even stranger customs and beliefs. But Sinuhe is a tortured soul, a man who has been in love many times, and always to his sorrow. He travels to forget. Based on actual historical events, Sinuhe encounters many of the real-life characters who are familiar to many: Pharaoh Akhnaton, Queen Nefertiti, Tutankhamon, and the ruthless Horemheb - all real people whose lives, images, and stories are known to us from stone engravings, sculpture, and papyrus chronicles brought to light by modern archaeology. Follow along on a journey down the ancient Nile to a time of mysterious religions, beautiful palaces, and squalid urban life - to a time of spiritual and political passions that threatened to overwhelm an entire kingdom.

Way back when F.E. Sillanpää was in the hospital care for his severe alcoholism bout and was consequently visited by Mika Waltari who was there for similar reasons. After Waltari had greeted the older author, Sillanpää responded: I am here because I won the Nobel price, and you’re here because you will never achieve it. Please, close the door from the outside.
This is a True story.

This is a lovely book, and the narrator, Charlton Griffin, is excellent once you get used to him.
@Lieve, if you have access to either The Dark Angel or The Adventurer by Mika Waltari it will be greatly appreciated.

@opacupa Charlton Griffin is heavy on the ear I wish he never touched a book. he narrates as if he is on news channel.

No. It’s 2021. Get a smartphone already, or some other device from the last decade or two.

@Within,
I thought so as well at first. I gave up on this book because he was putting me to sleep, but returned to it later on. Now I kind of like his voice, and I have a whole folder of his work.

@Lieve I must admit my phone is from 2015 sony to be exact but I don’t think it is really a sound problem. For example David Timson - Herodotus which is a long book to finnish was much comfortable to the ear and kinda lovely in the way he talk although he push his accent while narrating at times. but Griffin feels like making a statement or declaring war and he emphasis on the UO at the end of every word which is childish and just emotionless. for someone like me with weak eyes it is actually horrifyingly for me because exclusively it seems he is narrating all the classics. in The arabian nights he was my favorite narrator but as only the jinny.
BTW,I forgot to thank you for the upload. Thank you for making our world a better place.

@opacupa Im gonna enjoy the storm with some magic called adopting.since it seems he is the only one who has done this novel as an audiobook. I walked with him step by step to the world of ancient romans, the greeks and the Abbasids in my time machine. Livy,Horace,Ovid,Hesiod,The Arabian Nights. livy for suer was a long ride and so the Arabian Nights.but since I drifted with imagination, I finished them with him,in way or another. Im sure u gonna love this novel.

You are a horrible person. And an apple snob.
In the other parts of the world we buy decent mp3 players - 2-4 for the price of one ipod touch.
So, fck you.

I guess there really IS no accounting for taste!
I find the narration of Charlton Griffin absolutely superb and wonderfully evocative. At the first notes of his voice, I am in my mind immediately transported back to ancient Thebes.
This is one of my favourite narrations of all time, along with Ralph Lister narrating “Shogun”. I am sure there are others as well.
But I understand that if one first catches on to something which disturbs one, it can be nearly impossible to get rid of it again, and you can’t stop noticing it, and that certainly ruins a great deal of the magic of listening to a story being told.

Can Anyone Please Seed This?

I own this book in Finnish, both as an audio book and a normal book. I downloaded this English version out of curiosity, to see how much it differs from the original… and I must say, it is not a very faithful translation of the original work. Much of the prologue monologue is cut out from this version, as it alludes to slavery (and to the skin color of the slaves). What takes approximately 10 minutes in the Finnish audio book is read (or spoken) in English in less than 3 minutes, so take of that what you will.
