In his first book since What Went Wrong? Bernard Lewis examines the historical roots of the resentments that dominate the Islamic world today and that are increasingly being expressed in acts of terrorism. He looks at the theological origins of political Islam and takes us through the rise of militant Islam in Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, examining the impact of radical Wahhabi proselytizing, and Saudi oil money, on the rest of the Islamic world.
The Crisis of Islam ranges widely through 13 centuries of history, but in particular it charts the key events of the twentieth century leading up to the violent confrontations of today: the creation of the state of Israel, the Cold War, the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, and the September 11th attacks on the United States.
While hostility toward the West has a long and varied history in the lands of Islam, its current concentration on America is new. So too is the cult of the suicide bomber. Brilliantly disentangling the crosscurrents of Middle Eastern history from the rhetoric of its manipulators, Bernard Lewis helps us understand the reasons for the increasingly dogmatic rejection of modernity by many in the Muslim world in favor of a return to a sacred past. Based on his George Polk Award-winning article for The New Yorker, The Crisis of Islam is essential listening for anyone who wants to know what Usama bin Ladin represents and why his murderous message resonates so widely in the Islamic world.

This is the updated recording of the book. Way higher quality, and the previous version was dead on ABB anyway.

Anyone who read Bin Laden’s manifesto would know that he didn’t give a monkey’s nether regions for spreading Islam - it was all about the money.
So, when somebody seeks to explain his religious motivations, I’m already tuning out, because he didn’t have any. He literally wrote down why he did what he did.

@GordonEthnicSlur: OBL spent years living in caves in Afghanistan. His father was a Saudi billionaire, if he just wanted to make money, he could have done it easily, lived a long happy life.

Lol. Once again. it’s a pseudo-intellectual making assertions rather than reading what was written down.
Because that’s the clown school we live in today.
He. Wrote. It. Down. Try learning to read.
I know, this is all about audiobooks, but you and Jack could try the old “using your eyes and reading the words” technique.
It’s amazing how well that still works, unless you’re a desperate plonker trying to prop up stupid, that is. Then you can cut straight to making things up.
It is true the Bin Laden family is rich, I know many of them personally. It is also true that compare to the House of Saud, they feel particularly hard-done-by over oil revenues.
Hence, Bid Laden’s behavior. Which. He. Wrote. Down.

@GordonCoon oh Gordon. One day you’ll comment something that isn’t waffling on about IQ, intelligence or intellectualism. You start every comment off the same way, then it only devolves into further evidence as to why you’re the last person on earth qualified to be making those claims.
You never did explain, how does today’s right-wing have so much in common with the Democratic Socialism of the 30’s and 40’s?
Nice to see you’re keeping up with the tradition of lying about yourself whenever you think it’ll strengthen your argument. Vaccines? You worked on the inside for big pharma and know all their secrets. Ousted as an American? oh no you couldn’t possibly be, because your children have Chinese passports. Islam? Well you know Bin Laden’s family so you’ve got insight into his motives that directly contradict what’s been publicly available for decades.
“Read what he wrote, then you’ll understand”, like you did with The Road to Wigan Pier? Then decided your interpretation was much more informed than the author himself clarifying the direct opposite?
Then when that was pointed out, you moved the goalposts to try and say “well that’s what he meant then, but now it’s different” without any further clarification?
As Meredith Brooks would say: you’re a dunce, you’re a liar, you’re a child, you’re a dumass, you’re so simple and insane, with barely half a brain.

“I had that Bin Laden in the back of my cab, I did. Diamond geezer & no mistake, luvaduck! Didn’t half pen & ink, I shun’t wondah.”
Thx, Readist, Lewis is interesting, but unreliable (read: v dodgy) in some areas, such as the Armenian genocide.

Lewis is.. entertaining but his facts are ..suspect.

@Caesar963
Good to know, I had no idea. Thanks!

Have you his other book What went wrong?
January 8th, 2022
@whatdoyouwantuk133
No, I do not have it.
I could get it, though I don’t know if I actually want to spend much of my time reading + propagating his works if he’s so unreliable.
This was on JBP’s reading list + was a dead and outdated torrent I revived. So I felt it was a good upload.
I think if somebody wants to upload it, then sure, but I’ll be using my credits on other purchases.

Bernard Lewis was born to middle-class Jewish parents in Stoke Newington, London. He became interested in languages and history while preparing for his bar mitzvah. Advised GWB, Cheney, Rumsfield re: Iraq. Denies the Turks murdered 1 million Armenians. Most certainly was a cheerleader for killing bin Laden. American Enterprise Institute awarded. Most certainly an ultra-zionist. Buried in Tel Aviv. You really want to read him? Join the IDF instead. Same difference.
