Socialism is strangely impervious to refutation by real-world experience. Over the past hundred years, there have been more than two dozen attempts to build a socialist society, from the Soviet Union to Maoist China to Venezuela. All of them have ended in varying degrees of failure. But, according to socialism’s adherents, that is only because none of these experiments were “real socialism”. This book documents the history of this, by now, standard response. It shows how the claim of fake socialism is only ever made after the event. As long as a socialist project is in its prime, almost nobody claims that it is not real socialism. On the contrary, virtually every socialist project in history has gone through a honeymoon period, during which it was enthusiastically praised by prominent Western intellectuals. It was only when their failures became too obvious to deny that they got retroactively reclassified as “not real socialism”.

The zombie political system that will not die no matter how terrible it abuses the population. 21st century wack-a-mole.

Excellent book!
Socialism is actually Communism in sheep’s clothing.

Yeah, socialism is really bad. Almost as bad as communism.
And when a Right-winger tells us so, it must be true!

Oy. So, the facts presented cannot stand on their own? The reader can’t independently assess factual arguments? Would it be better if the author told you that the ideology was not responsible for the greatest genocidal evil? If he told you a fairytale to ease your slumbers? I would’ve thought that even an ideologue would have some interest in actual history, at least at some subterranean level.
And the invocation of the No True Scotsman fallacy & the blaming of everything But the ideology represent the most obvious self-parody, at this point.

Well, when you let a Nazi decide what socialism is, getting “genocidal evil” shouldn’t come as a surprise, should it?
Always funny when the Alt-Right tells everyone around them to use their heads and think for themselves. Don’t trust the scientists! Don’t trust the historians!! But the Nazis … yeah, those are a trustworthy bunch of people!!! 😘

But it just like hasn’t been tried in a like perfect way with a bunch of like perfect people yet. I mean, in that setting it will like work, like right? (gotta read it with a shrill AOC voice)

The only flaw in Socialism is human involvement/management. Human greed always prevails. It’s not a matter of a different rider on the same tired horse.

Odd description of the book — Trotsky was famously already attacking the authenticity of Soviet socialism very early. So the claim that everyone affirms the reality of socialist experiments while they’re happening is obviously not true. And socialists are known for bickering constantly about whether any real life version of socialism is authentic while it’s happening. But facts are of little interest to anti-communists, so it’s not surprising.

Putting the Mao cap on the cover encapsulates the argument. Socialism = Communism = Evil.
And this is exactly the line echoed by all the usual suspects above.
How about “Conservatism = Nazism = Evil”? And add a swastika armband.
Equally as valid an argument.

Nazism is short for national socialism Gweilo, so easy to conveniently forget about it

Came here for the socialism bootlickers getting triggered.
Was not disappointed.

Socialism will never die as an idea, because humanity will always have people who are stupid or lazy and think that someone taking care of them with someone else’s money is a neat idea.

Just by the title of this book, I can tell the author knows ziltch about socialism or how it is drastically different from the abomination that we call comumunism. I wish these “authors” would some basic research before producing lies and rubbish.

Any Anthropology 101 class will tell you (and show you evidence to back it up) that the entire reasons why humans began forming societies (look at the root of that word — seem familiar?) is to pool resources so that the dude whose crop got eaten by locust could get a share of the yield of the dude who had a bumper crop that year.
One of the earliest examples of this is the fossilized skeleton of a human whose leg had been broken–and healed, meaning someone fed them and took care of them long enough to recover from the injury and continue living.
Furthermore, basic anthropology shows us that the entire reason human societies began forming GOVERNMENTS was to organize the distribution of resources so that the entire society would prosper.
It’s when resources are NOT distributed in a reasonably equitable manner that a society crumbles.
THAT is the reason the idea of “socialism” will not die. It’s because “socialism” (i.e. the equitable distribution of available resources) is the basis for human beings banding together into societies and creating governments.
To do otherwise means the government has failed in its most basic function, and the society has become corrupted and nonviable. To do otherwise is, quite literally, inhuman.
April 11th, 2022
Any anthropology 101 class will also teach you that these early societys had been extended family groups. This is why socialism doest work outside the family group. Hitler also is left wing in the French tradition. Nazism is the hybrid of fascism and Marxism. Replace the boo jwah z with the Jews and the proletariat with Germans and you have Nazis.

Well written, well argued. The author attempts to show that each “new” socialist attempt eventually becomes a “state capitalist” failure. The process is so predictable as to be algorithmic. If real socialism has never been tried, why do all fake socialisms tread the same path?

Reader mispronounces several words, such as leitmotif or compatriot, taking me out of the listen. -2 stars.

“when you let a Nazi decide what socialism is” - Immediate recourse to No True Scotsman. Beyond parody. Solidly affirms the thesis once again.
“Don’t trust the historians!!” - Yeah, only trust ideological “historians” & subliterate ideological pamphlest.
“Trotsky was famously already attacking Soviet socialism very early” - Trotsky famously had an extreme grudge against Stalin because he had been ousted & outsmarted by him. Then assassinated by him. This was profoundly personal. If he was quicker on the draw, he would’ve murdered Stalin & everyone else. At base, it’s all about power over people, & exercising it as brutally as possible.
“entire reasons why humans began forming societies (look at the root of that word — seem familiar?) is to pool resources” - Partly. However, anthropology is not so reductive as all that. It’s also about defence from attack, elite power over others, division of tasks & greater efficiency.
The etymologies of words also do not handily imply that all forms of human cooperation can be expediently co-opted under the rubric of socialism. That would be ideologically reductive.
“One of the earliest examples of this is the fossilized skeleton of a human whose leg had been broken – & healed” - Always an inspiring & deeply human case. But scarcely an example of ideological socialism (more opportunistic reductionism). Rather, it demonstrates the operation of kinship groups, tribal cooperation & familial/fellow concern. There is also stark evidence from the fossil record that such hunter-gatherers routinely abandoned the elderly & female children. Resources were often limited, only extended so far, & harsh calculations were consequently made. This is not as inspiring a case.
“To do otherwise is, quite literally, inhuman.” - Socialism’s actual implementation & operation has indeed proven to be inhuman. None of us can contrive to escape this historical, social, economic & political factual reality. Try as some might.

As ever, people trying to define themselves out of their clearly established predicament. You’re merely serving to obliviously prove the point of the book, yet again. After every failed attempt at the ideology (which is every time) - “No, that was not the True Scotsman we were looking for, you see.”
Unfortunately, X obstinately remains X.
Where is the clear demarcation? Socialists/left across the world consistently supported & defended these appalling regimes, all throughout the clear, persistent communication of horrific genocides, vast systems of prison camps, human rights, industrial-level torture & abuse, millions of killings, forced & planned famines, etc. etc. All of which they knowingly & continuously denied (evil, sleazy phckers such as: Walter Duranty - who intentionally denied the Soviet forced famine in Ukraine (the Holodomor) - & won the Pulitzer Prize for this ideological “reportage” while a journalist at the NYT; Noam Chomsky consistently denying ideological atrocities in, for inst, China & globally; all the panoply of useful id!ots: authors, journalists, politicians, trade union officials, activists - most impressive).
Anyone who has ever (genuinely) read George Orwell will know that he delineates & details these dark, ideological convictions, manipulations & deceptions amongst socialists & others on the left. Orwell was utterly scathing in his condemnation of socialists who thought Soviet Russia was a Socialist paradise.
Orwell lamented that Socialists in Britain excused Stalin’s crimes - essentially supporting this barbarism - & depicted Socialist Russia in a manner diametrically opposed to reality.
As Orwell notes, the socialist ranks were full of activists who could expound on the details of Marxist orthodoxies, but their intense fixation upon these narrow ideological convictions left the actual working-class cold. George Orwell was that rare individual, a socialist with worldly experience & a true capacity for incisive introspection. He played the role of devil’s advocate so persuasively that his publisher wrote a rebuttal as the foreword to The Road to Wigan Pier.
Why not a modicum of honesty & historical truth of this kind, please? Instead of the standard persistent ideological lies?
Attacking & abusing people who are appropriately condemning genocide - that is central to toxic ideology.
And trying to dismiss people who appropriately condemn such clearly evil regimes as “the usual suspects” has disturbing echoes. As if the people who point out the human rights abuses are the problem; at fault for being “ideologically incorrect.”
