This audiobook has been made for three purposes. First, to provide the Orthodox listener with a competent overview of the history of Protestantism and its major traditions, from its beginnings in the 16th century to the present day. This overview relies heavily upon the Reformer’s own words as well as the creeds of various Protestant faiths in order to avoid misrepresentation and caricature.
Second, to acquaint Orthodox and non-Orthodox listeners with a narrative of the historical relations between the Orthodox East and the Protestant West.
Finally, to provide a summary of Orthodox theological opinion on the tenets of Protestantism.

Cool - not a perspective I’m familiar with, as a decadent Westerner (in tooth & claw). A rich tradition with which I would like to become more conversant.

A Catholic’s view of Protestantism?
August 21st, 2019
@flarecat - Specifically, the Eastern Orthodox perspective on Protestantism. The Orthodox Church goes way back. They’re also called the Orthodox Catholic Church, but they’re not Roman Catholics.

@Caesar, thank you!
@Flarecat, For the first 1000 years, there was only one church, then the Roman Catholic church broke off from the other 4 patriarchates of the church, creating what most modern people know as Catholicism. Due to the rise of Islam and other sociopolitical factors the Orthodox church (the original four patriarchates) came under Ottoman and other rule/oppression, so were surviving, but not easily accessible to the West. In the meantime Rome grew rapidly, expanding to the Americas and Western Europe. Protestantism came out of rejection of Catholicism in the 1300-1500s.
Also, the word “Catholic” means “universal”, so the creed uses it to mean that.
