Thank you! I like my Science Fiction with some science, and Andy Weir does it just right: Enough righteous adventure with the science presented deftly enough to understand. Too many “Hard SF” writers make me wish I hadn’t sold back all my physics texts to the campus bookstore (where I got ripped off!)

I’m only an hour into this and I can already recognize the pure Andy Weir signature of science plus storyline. He’s one of only a handful of writers left who deserve to be classified as truly SF. Thank you for sharing this.

Screentan. Minor changes to audio versus text editions of a book are usually done when the text doesn’t translate or at least doesn’t translate well to audio. E.g. a paragraph full of numbers/binary code can be breezed over by a reader but can result in a few minutes of boredom for a listener.

It’s pretty obvious what the changes would have to be as you listen to it, but saying what it is could potentially be a spoiler. It’s a good performance, highly recommended.

I’m almost 1/2 way through and I don’t think I can finish. I find it boring and nowhere as good as “The Martian”. I find the main character to a jerk who thinks he’s funny and isn’t. Disappointed.

Just finished it. Fantastic novel. A few stretches here and there for narrative sake but completely forgivable considering how engrossing the story is.

Screentan - Don’t miss out. I would recommend the audio version of this over the book, just because. It’s sort of like Neuromancer. Itried to talk Henry Trentman into doing an audiobook of it in the 80s when I worked for recorded Books Inc. He said no, because of the computer-use /binary/ hexidecimal parts. The challenge with this book is short of like trying to do a representative audio version of Demolished Man by Bester. But this works where that wouldn’t. Just listen to it. I think RBI eventually did a version of Neuromancer. A book like this just presents creative problems.
That being said: NOBODY should listen to this book. You will fall in love and not want it to end. I’m in the last third of it and I’m taking a break because I do not want it to end.
I loved the Martian, but this is better. Highly entertaining. Thought provoking, but not on a Lem level. More accessible. I love this book. Thank you.

I loved it. It’s got a lot of science (no surprise there w/Andy Weir) and a lot of heart.
I was moved more than once and my eyes strongly moistened towards the end. Probably all the dust from the fires to the west …
