Book Description
===================
Critically acclaimed novelist Michael Farris Smith pulls Nick Carraway
out of the shadows and into the spotlight in this fascinating look
into his life before Gatsby Before Nick Carraway moved to West Egg and
into Gatsby’s periphery, he was at the center of a very different
story-one taking place along the trenches and deep within the tunnels
of World War I. Floundering in the wake of the destruction he
witnessed firsthand, Nick delays his return home, hoping to escape the
questions he cannot answer about the horrors of war. Instead, he
embarks on a transcontinental redemptive journey that takes him from a
whirlwind Paris romance-doomed from the very beginning-to the dizzying
frenzy of New Orleans, rife with its own flavor of debauchery and
violence. An epic portrait of a truly singular era and a sweeping,
romantic story of self-discovery, this rich and imaginative novel
breathes new life into a character that many know but few have
pondered deeply. Charged with enough alcohol, heartbreak, and profound
yearning to paralyze even the heartiest of golden age scribes, Nick
reveals the man behind the narrator who has captivated readers for
decades.

I thought that cover looked familiar. Interesting.

Yes, you are right. I missed that detail. The eyes of that Dr. Nicholby (was that his name?); on the billboard across from the gas station?
(I wish this were a “real” prequel.) Maybe we’ll at least find out if Nick was really gay (and thus possibly more than just intrigued by his neighbor.) I think my Lit professor suggested that (but I missed that detail as well.)

I remember it from a previous cover, mooose. Weren’t the eyes on the poster (Dr. Eckleburg?) possibly intended as a divine observer, a sternly disapproving watcher of all the licentious doings and failings?
Old Nick may have merely been intrigued by the intriguing parvenu, Gatsby, rather than wanting to jump his Great bones.

Yes, that’s right. Those eyes were on a popular blue paperback around the time I was assigned that book in school. (A long time ago!)
Funny thing is I thought they were female eyes & never (until now) connected them with Dr. Eckleburg. (I think you’re right on the name too.) You have a much better memory than I do.

I refer to my memory as “google” - and tell everyone that they can have a memory just like mine!
I think they’re definitely feminine peepers.
We read the book in school, and then had to watch the really boring Redford film. A great injustice to a great book.
