In a completely original analysis, prizewinning historian Alfred W. McCoy explores America’s rise as a world power—from the 1890s through the Cold War—and its bid to extend its hegemony deep into the 21st century through a fusion of cyberwar, space warfare, trade pacts, and military alliances. McCoy then analyzes the marquee instruments of US hegemony—covert intervention, client elites, psychological torture, and worldwide surveillance.
Peeling back layers of secrecy, McCoy exposes a military and economic battle for global domination fought in the shadows, largely unknown to those outside the highest rungs of power. Can the United States extend the “American Century” or will China guide the globe for the next 100 years? McCoy devotes his final chapter to these questions, boldly laying out a series of scenarios that could lead to the end of Washington’s world domination by 2030.

China looks set to become a global economic power without becoming a cultural power. It’s social & political models are far too restrictive & narrowly ideological. And, of course, there’s the genocide.

@ Thamus, indeed he is a great writer but sadly that most of his other books are not converted yet into audiobooks.
His latest book was (To Govern the Globe: World Orders and Catastrophic Change), was a good read.

I very strongly recommend that everyone read Unrivaled by Dr. Michael Beckley. That book will provide you with a very well informed perspective on the power of the US and China. Who is more wealthy, a man with one child who earns $100,000 per year, or a man with 19 children who earns $100,000 per year? That is a gross oversimplification but should help to get you thinking. GDP does not equal wealth or productivity! Providing for 1.4 billion people is wildly expensive!!!
China has major problems with debt, demographics, governance, a low per capita income, pollution, very few alliances, unfriendly neighbors, an inexperienced military, a lack of overseas ports, a lack of a blue water navy, a limited energy supply, a declining private sector, a limited water supply, a lack of arable land, a declining ability to move workers from rural to urban settings, a falling working age population, the worst aging problem in history, a lack of pension funds, rising labor costs, low productivity per worker, a lack of free high school, a lack of top universities, and a military that has to focus a lot on internal security.
The US has some issues, but they are a far cry from the unbelievable number of problems that the Chinese face. The US spent over 3 times more on its military than China in 2020. Unlike China, the US can project power anywhere in the world and has 10 aircraft carrier battle groups. With major economic challenges ahead, the Chinese will not be able to afford to match the military spending of the United States at any point this century.
