I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of story telling. Mr. Heppner created a believable universe, in which characters had their own voices (unlike the routinely disappointing Harry Turtledove: my ears bleed when I listen to his books), nor was it the usual “gun-porn” found in most “prepper” fiction, with endless, tedious discussion of hollow-point bullets (yada. While there was some libertarian polemic, it was consistent with the character’s nature. I think it was better than Tom Clancy’s “Red Storm Rising”, which hooked me on the genre back when I was 20-something Airman stationed in West Germany. I was initially put off by the cover art, which sort of looks like the usual run of self-published crap in which the author’s nephew does a screen grab from a video game. Audible needs to do a better job on their graphics. Otherwise, worthy.
