All people are equal but, as Human Diversity explores, all groups of people are not the same — a fascinating investigation of the genetics and neuroscience of human differences.
The thesis of Human Diversity is that advances in genetics and neuroscience are overthrowing an intellectual orthodoxy that has ruled the social sciences for decades. The core of the orthodoxy consists of three dogmas:
- Gender is a social construct.
- Race is a social construct.
- Class is a function of privilege.
The problem is that all three dogmas are half-truths. They have stifled progress in understanding the rich texture that biology adds to our understanding of the social, political, and economic worlds we live in.
It is not a story to be feared. “There are no monsters in the closet,” Murray writes, “no dread doors we must fear opening.” But it is a story that needs telling. Human Diversity does so without sensationalism, drawing on the most authoritative scientific findings, celebrating both our many differences and our common humanity.
“The propositions that accompany most of the chapters . . . are not as snappy as I would prefer—but there’s a reason for their caution and caveats. On certain important points, the clamor of genuine scientific dispute has abated and we don’t have to argue about them anymore. But to meet that claim requires me to state the propositions precisely. I am prepared to defend all of them as “things we don’t have to argue about anymore”—but exactly as I worded them, not as others may paraphrase them.
Here they are:
1. Sex differences in personality are consistent worldwide and tend to widen in more gender-egalitarian cultures.
2. On average, females worldwide have advantages in verbal ability and social cognition while males have advantages in visuospatial abilities and the extremes of mathematical ability.
3. On average, women worldwide are more attracted to vocations centered on people and men to vocations centered on things.
4. Many sex differences in the brain are coordinate with sex differences in personality, abilities, and social behavior.
5. Human populations are genetically distinctive in ways that correspond to self-identified race and ethnicity.
6. Evolutionary selection pressure since humans left Africa has been extensive and mostly local.
7. Continental population differences in variants associated with personality, abilities, and social behavior are common.
8. The shared environment usually plays a minor role in explaining personality, abilities, and social behavior.
9. Class structure is importantly based on differences in abilities that have a substantial genetic component.
10. Outside interventions are inherently constrained in the effects they can have on personality, abilities, and social behavior.”

Identifying problems & issues used to be crucial as a step towards tackling them. The idea of people being equal on an individual level, with regard to aptitude, is nonsense upon stilts. Nature does not recognise or respect equality. However, opening the Pandora’s Box of essential racial differences scares the hell out of Caesar.

@andyinmanch: The article from notorious left-wing Vox you link to, supposedly meant to demolish the validity of Murray’s research, rambles on without any actual facts, presenting only specious assertions. Ad hominems and attempts to shame are always the left’s response to anyone who does not bow to their ideology.
The fact that genetics is fundamental to such traits as IQ does not fit with the leftist ideology which insists that everyone is equal. It is evident to anyone with even a modest IQ that this is PC fantasy.
Other research by many independent reputable studies strongly supports that due to genetic differences, men tend to be better at mathematics than women (who would have guessed?). Apparently, according to the left, all these researchers are misogynists.

The “left” got your ire up? The thing is, there is only one acceptable answer to research like like this. If the research doesn’t match the acceptable you will be demolished in the public sphere. Under such circumstances it’s almost like there is no point in such research. And, I’d say I pretty much agree with this (let sleeping dogs sleep), but…
the left complicated the issue by ascribing any and all differences in outcome to misogyny, racism, etc… Just think of the Google guy. You can’t ascribe it to differences in values or gender aptitudes or anything else. The white guy is always the bad guy,and it’s always his fault.
Hey, some of the time maybe it is! Historically it certainly was, but if you’re going to keep pointing the finger then I suppose somebody is going to eventually step back and do some research… are there potentially any differences between the sexes that might be relevant. Then the sh*t storm begins.
To make matters even more confusing, in my experience, what Murray says and what the left think he says are often two different things.

Sensible analysis, ehead. Theoretically, there is no unacceptable knowledge. There is such a thing, however, as socially inconvenient/unpalatable knowledge. That changes with the cycles of time, of course.

@ehead: There certainly is a point to the research. One value of it is that it counters the left’s demand for equal outcome, which is nonsensical and damaging. For example, insisting on racial quotas for job/university placement on the basis that everyone has the same aptitude, just not the same “privileges”.
The left can’t see that this is another form of prejudice, in this case against those with merit. It leads to fan erosion of standards (this has already happened in universities) with the advancement of less competent people to all positions in society based on skin colour, or gender, etc.
Bending at the knee from the intimidation tactics of the left because your ideas do not comply with their ideology is irresponsible and cowardly. We are in a culture war and there will be casualties.

thank you all for the outrage, only reason i heard about the book and im getting it. Honestly not interested so much in the race aspect,, but the gender biological influence denial is something im kin an avid reader of, and posting SPLC does not take credibility away at all, if anything after seeing the SPLC falsly accuse so many people of being something they are not, and after seeing them and create so many fake outrage, it gives the author credibility to have a file over there.

Murray is quality writing. Haters haven’t read his stuff and they don’t have any cogent arguments to counter his arguments.
