This is the hidden side of D-Day which has fascinated readers/listeners around the world. Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944.
But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?
What were their experiences on facing the tanks, the flamethrowers and the devastating air superiority of the Allies? This book sheds fascinating light on these questions, bringing together statements made by German survivors after the war, when time had allowed them to reflect on their state of mind, their actions and their choices of June 6.
We see a perspective of D-Day which deserves to be added to the historical record, in which ordinary German troops struggled to make sense of the onslaught that was facing them, and emerged stunned at the weaponry and sheer determination of the Allied soldiers.
We see, too, how the Germans fought in the great coastal bunkers, perceived as impregnable fortresses, but in reality often becoming tombs for their crews. Above all, we now have the unheard human voices of the individual German soldiers - the men who are so often portrayed as a faceless mass.

The Greatest Story Never Told.
History may be written by the victors, but the internet is allowing us to truly know real history.
The Germans were not monsters, and Weimar Germany was not a gay rights paradise as certain artists would lead you to believe, child brothels are not progressive.

Only select units were veteran units on the wall. Most of the veteran units were further inland as reserve counter attack forces and many came from the Eastern Front. Most the troops manning the walls were relatively new to war and the scale of the disaster was probably eye opening for them. Most were under trained and under-equipped troops unable to anything other to man their bunkers and die.
As for whether Germans were monstrous people, I think that is moot point really. The scale of the atrocities and the organization required to pull off such epic human suffering means historical documentation is plentiful and very damning of the whole of Germany. It was a very very evil time, and the Germans are rightfully ashamed of it.
Germans applied their typical German efficiency, attention to detail, obsessive habit of leaving paper trails, and organization even when committing atrocities. The fact that they weren’t demonic monsters is worse. The fact that Germans were so scientific, calculating, and practical about committing atrocities is worse in many ways.
I am not discounting the book. I am just keeping perspective.

It is always a moot point if someone is a “monster.” Monstrous acts were committed. It’s always good to get away from blaming very human atrocities on monsters and putting such actions firmly back in the realm of “things people do.”

I feel I must announce my bewilderment at some of these earlier comments.
I find myself unable to follow their way of thinking.
If you listen to these books,
And take them at face value(as I believe they should be) all you will hear is an account of proceedings & events that occurred to each individual.
There is nothing political about it.
All I heard was an account from different individuals of their experiences on that historic day.
By the way “doesanynamework”,
Thank you for your uploads.!!
