An epic history of a doomed civilization and a lost empire.
The devastating struggle to the death between the Carthaginians and the Romans was one of the defining dramas of the ancient world. In an epic series of land and sea battles, both sides came close to victory before the Carthaginians finally succumbed and their capital city, history, and culture were almost utterly erased.
Drawing on a wealth of new archaeological research, Richard Miles vividly brings to life this lost empire-from its origins among the Phoenician settlements of Lebanon to its apotheosis as the greatest seapower in the Mediterranean. And at the heart of the history of Carthage lies the extraordinary figure of Hannibal-the scourge of Rome and one of the greatest military leaders, but a man who also unwittingly led his people to catastrophe.
The first full-scale history of Carthage in decades, Carthage Must Be Destroyed reintroduces modern readers to the larger-than-life historical players and the ancient glory of this almost forgotten civilization.

Ceterum censeo…thanks rmoor, old friend. If Hannibal had succeeded, we would be heirs to the Carthaginian Empire rather than the Roman. African imperium over the Mediterranean, rather than European.

Phoenician colonists from modern-day Lebanon, led by Dido (also known as Queen Elissa), founded Carthage circa 814 BC. Queen Elissa (also known as “Alissar”) was an exiled princess of the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre. So, The Carthaginians were ethnically East Mediterraneans , not African, and were in conflict not just with the Romans and the Greeks in Sicily but also with the Berbers, the indigenous people of North Africa. The African Berbers were later used as the main fighting force against the Romans, just like they were used by Arab colonizers, hundreds of years later, against Spain.

Thanks marco, I vaguely knew from way back that the Carthaginians were settlers of some stripe, like the rulers of Egypt being Hellenes (Macedonians) following Alexander’s victory over the Egyptians, and founding of Alexandria.
I was maintaining that the centre of gravity and hegemony probably would have been located in North Africa instead of Europe.
It was a winner take all kind of conflict, with control of the Mediterranean in the balance.

Great Book! Audiobooks about the history of Carthage are relatively rare.. But audiobooks about Phoenician history (which is what the first half of this book more or less is) are almost non-existent!
