Once we bowled in leagues, usually after work–but no longer. This seemingly small phenomenon symbolizes a significant social change that Robert Putnam has identified in this brilliant volume, which The Economist hailed as “a prodigious achievement.”
Drawing on vast new data that reveal Americans’ changing behavior, Putnam shows how we have become increasingly disconnected from one another and how social structures–whether they be PTA, church, or political parties–have disintegrated. Until the publication of this groundbreaking work, no one had so deftly diagnosed the harm that these broken bonds have wreaked on our physical and civic health, nor had anyone exalted their fundamental power in creating a society that is happy, healthy, and safe.

The decline of community across the board can only have exacerbated in the almost quarter century since publication. It’s the indomitable black mirror now, rather than just tv & gaming.

It’s {neoliberal capitalism} destroyed every bit of human unity right down to the family unit. It’s not like there was a room full of bean counting plotters, saying ‘if we destroy the family it will create loads of consumers - all my signal nephews & nieces bought air-fryers & Netflix shutdown password sharing [I USED to use my sisters password] - it’s natural progression…like Overshoot. I love my air-fryer,but when the electricity is gone forever, I’ll wear it like a helmet when my cannibal sewer tribe storms the fences of high end gated communities full of criminal boomers who’s high dollar security detail left to go look out for their own families.

Remember, when conservative people say things like “family” and “community”, what they really mean is “hierarchical organizations that we can easily control, in which all crimes are committed by people who are like us so that we can continue to control everything.”
Whenever you hear about yet another christian priest who loves little boys just a little too much, he’ll be surrounded by a community of true believers who have held his secret for DECADES. Same thing with a christian father who loves his little kids just a bit too much - the whole family knew all along and did nothing about it.
Those who love fascist institutions such as family and community do so because these organizations are perfectly set up for them to get away with crimes. Just ask yourself these questions: why would you want control over someone else’s life? What gives you the right? Why should it annoy you that someone has different beliefs and opinions than yours? Answer: because you’re a self-righteous fascist and have been socialized in an angry, militant fascist culture that has given you the right to tell everyone else what they SHOULD be doing… But who tells YOU what YOU should be doing?
