If you have an old walkman or device that seeks very slowly and like the style where there are a number of small mp3 files instead of a single file, you can use “mkwalkman”, included, to do that. It assumes you have ffmpeg and python installed. It is for Linux flavors but could be easily adapted to Windoze. Should work on Mac if you can just type ffmpeg and python and get those programs.
To use it: ./mkwalkman
where is the name of an mp3 or m4b file WITHOUT the extension,
is an integer that is greater than the number of minutes the audio lasts.

If you want to split MP3, much better (in Windows) to use MP3DirectCut. It’s free, fast, and doesn’t reencode the audio. (if this mkwalkman method uses ffmpeg, it’s reencoding)
On MP3DirectCut’s “Special” menu use “Pause detection”, set the pause to something like 0.2 sec, set the “Skip” to the minimum number of seconds you want for each part, and it will divide it up, then “File/save split” to save it as a new set of MP3 files. You can use “Special/autocue” if you want an exact constant time, but that will break words.

Good points, Gweilo. I should have also mentioned it assumes you have mp3splt installed. It should only re-encode if you supply an m4b, and yeah, the splits are dumb, right at 5 minutes. But, if you’re on Linux and stuck you can hack the code for yourself and get pretty good results.
